James R. Hodgins Scholarship Fund

The James R. Hodgins Scholarships were established by Mary Jane Hodgins in memory of her husband James R. Hodgins, who passed away in 1997.

James and Mary Hodgins

James R. Hodgins was a very bright man who graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1933 - at the young age of 14. At age 15, he began attending CMU. He became an English and foreign language teacher, and taught Spanish, German, French and Latin. He received a Masters Degree in English from the University of Detroit and a Doctorate Degree in English from Michigan State University. He taught at various schools around the state of Michigan, and spent 43 years teaching in the English Department at Central Michigan University.

Mary Jane Hodgins taught English at Mt. Pleasant High School for several years. She passed away on November 16, 2008, but these scholarships serve as a legacy honoring both her and her husband. They valued education and believed it to be important to have the opportunity to pursue a higher education.
