Humane Animal Treatment Society Receives $185,629 Donation for Endowment
Gerald R. Watson, a lifelong member of the Mt. Pleasant community, passed away in February 2023 leaving behind an estate plan that reflected his love for animals, especially cats. Gerald served in the Army during the Vietnam era and worked at Central Michigan University as an Audiovisual Technician for the remainder of his career. His kind and thoughtful nature endeared him to all who knew him.
The Gerald Watson Fund for H.A.T.S. was established in 2023. What started as a $50,000 endowment fund now exceeds $230,000, thanks to a $185,629 donation from Gerald's estate. These gifts will be invested and live on in perpetuity through the Community Foundation. Annually, the Humane Animal Treatment Society (H.A.T.S.) will receive a disbursement from the fund’s investment earnings.
Founded in 1999, H.A.T.S. is a non-profit animal welfare organization independently operated, serving the Mid-Michigan area. Contracted as the sole provider of all animal care and adoption services at the Isabella County Animal Control facility, H.A.T.S. helps nearly 1,000 homeless or lost pets each year. They provide food, vaccinations, veterinary care, and a clean, safe environment, striving to give these animals a second chance at life.
The organization relies on donations, local community support, and grant funds to continue lifesaving services. H.A.T.S. has made significant strides in animal welfare, reducing euthanasia and promoting responsible pet ownership. Services like the H.A.T.S. Health Clinic make a substantial impact in reducing animal overpopulation.
"We are deeply honored and incredibly grateful for the generosity of the late Gerald R. Watson. His actions reflect a profound love for animals, particularly cats, and his commitment to their well-being. This substantial contribution will serve as a lasting tribute to his compassion and dedication. With this support, we can continue providing safe shelter and lifesaving veterinary services to the animals who need us most. Gerald's legacy will live on through the positive impact on the lives of the animals in our community. Our heartfelt thanks go to Gerald and the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation for ensuring the enduring success of our mission," said Amanda Tillotson, Executive Director, H.A.T.S.
